State investigators have released new information regarding a jet ski crash that left Alabama State Senator Garlan E. Gudger seriously injured. The 49-year-old senator from Cullman was operating a 2024 Sea-Doo GTI on Sunday afternoon when his personal watercraft was struck from behind by another Sea-Doo, driven by his son, 21-year-old Garlan E. Gudger III, according to ALEA Trooper Sgt. Jeremy Burkett.
The collision occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. in the Little Crooked Creek area, commonly known as Rock Creek, situated on Smith Lake in Cullman County. Both Senator Gudger and his son were thrown into the water upon impact, but fortunately, both had been wearing personal flotation devices, mitigating the risk of further harm.
Bystanders near the scene immediately came to the aid of the father and son, providing assistance in getting them out of the water and transporting them to a nearby dock. Gudger III was evaluated by paramedics at the scene and subsequently released. However, Senator Gudger was airlifted to UAB Hospital, where he remains in the Intensive Care Unit after undergoing surgery. Reports indicate that he sustained internal bleeding and other injuries, as confirmed by a statement issued by the Alabama State Senate.
In response to the accident, Gudger's wife, Heather, expressed gratitude towards the first responders, the helicopter airlift unit, and the medical staff at UAB Hospital, acknowledging their role in preventing a potentially more dire situation. Mrs. Gudger also extended her appreciation to all those across the state who have offered prayers and support to their family during this difficult time.
Known for his strong character and dedication to public service, Senator Gudger is expected to recover from his injuries and resume his duties in serving the citizens of his district. His wife emphasized his tenacity and commitment to the conservative Alabama values that resonate with many residents.
The Crane Hill Fire Department and Cullman EMS promptly responded to the scene, providing medical treatment and transportation assistance. Meanwhile, the investigation into the jet ski crash is currently ongoing, conducted by ALEA's Marine Patrol Division.
As the investigation continues, prayers and well-wishes from the community pour in for Senator Gudger's swift recovery, while vigilance and caution on the waterways remain paramount, especially during holiday periods.
