In the early hours of Sunday morning, a mass shooting occurred on Akron's east side, leaving one person dead and two critically injured. The incident, which involved multiple firearms, took place during a large birthday party that attracted an estimated 200 people. Akron police have received several 911 calls reporting shots fired in the vicinity of Kelly and 8th Avenues.
The victim of the shooting has been identified as Lateris Cook, a 27-year-old man, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as rapid gunfire rang out, causing over a hundred people to flee in fear for their lives.
Akron police authorities are actively investigating the incident but have yet to make any arrests. Detectives from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) have been called in to examine the shell casings found at the crime scene. Their analysis intends to determine if the firearms used in the mass shooting have been linked to any previous criminal activities.
The events leading up to the shooting began with a birthday party that escalated in size throughout Saturday evening. Police were initially called around 10 p.m. to address noise and nuisance complaints, resulting in the party being dispersed. However, the gathering resumed later in the night, ending abruptly with the eruption of gunfire just after midnight.
Home security footage obtained by the FOX 8 I-Team captured the harrowing moments when the shooting began. Akron Police Chief Brian Harding believes that the shots were exchanged between a person firing from a vehicle and individuals in the crowd.
Chief Harding acknowledged the presence of multiple shell casings at the scene, indicating the involvement of several firearms. The investigation is exploring the possibility that the incident may be gang-related, raising concerns of potential retaliatory violence.
Akron Mayor Shammas Malik voiced his concerns and urged witnesses to come forward with any information they may have. Stressing the importance of holding the responsible parties accountable, Mayor Malik appealed to the community, stating, "You have an obligation to speak with police and help us solve this case."
Information leading to the identification and apprehension of those involved in the shooting could result in a reward of up to $22,500. Authorities are encouraging individuals with any relevant details to contact the Akron Police Department Detective Bureau or provide anonymous information to the Summit County Crimestoppers.
The tragic incident has sparked a plea for an end to violence within the community. Charnella Roberts, a local resident, passionately appealed for unity, stating, "This is not it. We need to stop. Stop!"
As the investigation into this mass shooting continues, the Akron Police Department and city officials are dedicated to ensuring safety in the community while holding individuals accountable for their actions.
