### Former Sheriff Accused of Killing Judge Faces New Court Hearing
Morgan County, Ky. - Fresh developments have emerged following a recent court appearance for former Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines, who stands accused of the murder of District Judge Kevin Mullins. Last week, Stines entered a plea of not guilty to the murder charge.
During a preliminary hearing held Tuesday in Morgan County District Court, the prosecution called upon the Kentucky State Police (KSP) to testify and presented crucial evidence, including a video that captured the shocking incident. The video footage showed Judge Mullins being shot multiple times and collapsing behind his desk. The revelation of this video triggered audible distress, with sobbing and wailing filling the courtroom.
A detective took the stand, identifying Stines as the shooter. The detective further detailed Stines' behavior post-shooting, describing him as appearing calm and reportedly saying, "Treat me fair." Under cross-examination, it was revealed that Stines attempted to call his daughter using both his and Judge Mullins' phones, with his daughter’s contact number found on Judge Mullins' phone.
After considering the evidence presented, the presiding judge found probable cause for the murder charge. Consequently, the case is slated to proceed to a grand jury.
In a noteworthy development earlier this week, Stines officially announced his retirement from his role as sheriff through a statement issued by his attorney. Stines is currently being detained at the Leslie County Jail.
This case continues to evolve, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
