Article:
A harrowing incident unfolded at Omaha Northwest High School on Tuesday afternoon as a 15-year-old student was shot, leaving them in critical condition. According to Omaha Police, the shooting occurred within the school premises and was determined to be an isolated incident involving two students.

OPD Deputy Chief Sherie Thomas gave a briefing at 2 p.m., confirming that the victim was discovered inside the school. The school resource officer promptly alerted the police about the shooting at 12:23 p.m., prompting the Omaha Police Department to issue a wireless emergency alert to the surrounding area. Shortly after, at 12:30 p.m., the school went into lockdown.

At 12:58 p.m., law enforcement officers apprehended the suspected shooter near 80th Street and Bauman Avenue after a pursuit. Reports suggest that the suspect is also believed to be a student. Sources have indicated that the arrest occurred without incident. In a Twitter update at 1:21 p.m., OPD clarified that there is currently no public safety threat.

Following the incident, the school's lockdown was lifted at 1:30 p.m., allowing for an orderly release of students. The release process was meticulously managed, with students being released room by room and guided to the western section of the campus near the football stadium. Crime-scene tape was visible on the premises, and OPD's helicopter was observed circling the area.

Omaha Public Schools (OPS) and the police urge families to exercise patience as they work to reunite students with their parents or guardians. OPS outlined the planned release process, stating that students who utilize school buses will be transported first, followed by students who do not rely on bus transportation and are accompanied by their families on-site. Lastly, students who walk or drive themselves to school will be released.

Congressman Don Bacon expressed his condolences and anger in a statement released on Tuesday afternoon. He extended prayers for the student's recovery and commended the swift response of first responders in attending to the victim's needs and apprehending the suspect. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with details surrounding the weapon's acquisition and the exact location of the incident yet to be determined.
