In a new public memo released on Monday, the White House criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson's stance on ongoing border security and supplemental funding talks. The memo comes as the Republican Party unveils articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre highlighted Johnson's criticism of President Biden's endorsement of the negotiations, arguing that it is the administration's policies and executive actions, rather than current law, that are fueling the border crisis. Jean-Pierre pointed out that Johnson himself previously advocated for new legal authorities to secure the border.

"If Speaker Johnson continues to believe, as President Biden and members of both parties in Congress do, that immediate action is needed at the border, he should provide the authority and funding requested by this administration," Jean-Pierre stated.

Johnson's spokesman, Raj Shah, defended the House Speaker's position, emphasizing that "national security begins at our own border." Shah revealed that Johnson strongly supports the Secure the Border Act and urged the Senate and the President to endorse similar legislation.

President Biden recently pledged to "shut down the border" if the proposed Senate bill becomes law. In response, Johnson accused the President of making false claims and asserted that Biden already possesses the necessary legal authority to secure the border through executive action.

Johnson had previously written a letter to Biden, calling on him to take immediate executive actions such as ending catch-and-release, reinstating the Remain in Mexico program, and renewing construction of the border wall.

The White House memo also mentioned former President Trump's calls for border and immigration reform and closing loopholes in the system. A group of senators from both parties has been in talks with the Biden administration for weeks regarding measures to address the ongoing migrant crisis. Republicans in both the House and Senate have stressed the importance of these reforms in their support for the Democrats' $106 billion supplemental funding request, which includes allocations for Ukraine, Israel, and other issues.

As the border crisis continues to escalate, tensions between the White House and House Republicans are further strained. The articles of impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas put the Biden administration under increased scrutiny regarding its handling of border security and immigration policies.

It remains to be seen how the ongoing negotiations and debate surrounding border security and funding will play out in the coming weeks, as all parties involved attempt to find a resolution to the pressing issue at hand.
