Wauconda High School Teacher Killed in Head-On Collision with Wrong-Way Driver

A tragic incident occurred in Wheeling on Sunday when a wrong-way driver crashed head-on into a vehicle, resulting in the death of a well-respected Wauconda High School math teacher. The accident took place at the intersection of Palatine Road and Wheeling Road in Wheeling, prompting an immediate response from the Wheeling Fire Department and Wheeling Police Department.
According to Wheeling Deputy Police Chief Al Steffen, the collision happened on the westbound lanes of Palatine Road, just east of Wheeling Road. The wrong-way driver, who authorities suspect was intoxicated, was traveling eastbound in the opposite direction. The consequences were devastating as the suspect's vehicle collided head-on with a car driven by a 53-year-old man.
Tragically, the driver of the car, identified as Robert E. Gillen of Palatine, did not survive the crash. Gillen's untimely death was confirmed by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Meanwhile, the other occupants in both vehicles sustained injuries, with one suffering serious but non-life-threatening harm.
The seriousness of the incident prompted the activation of the Northwest Suburban Major Case Assistance Team's Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction unit. Investigators arrived at the scene to gather evidence and reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the collision.
Gillen was a highly regarded member of the Wauconda Community Unit School District 118. He had worked as a math teacher and athletic trainer at Wauconda High School since 1996. His sudden passing has left the entire school community shocked and grieving.
Superintendent Dr. David Wilm expressed his condolences in a statement, saying, "The Wauconda District 118 community is saddened by the unexpected passing of Bob Gillen, a dedicated Math teacher, athletic trainer, and colleague. We join Bob's family, students, staff, and community members in grieving this tragic loss." Wilm also highlighted Gillen's commitment to education, care for athletes, and support for his colleagues.
