A 15-year-old migrant from Venezuela, identified as Jesus Alejandro Rivas-Figueroa, suspected of a shooting incident in Times Square, has been apprehended by law enforcement officials. The arrest took place on Friday afternoon at a residence in Yonkers. The US Marshals Joint Regional Fugitive Task Force, in collaboration with the NYPD, successfully captured the teen around 3:30 p.m, according to reliable sources.
The arrest came shortly after NYPD Chief of Patrol, John Chell, publicly named Rivas-Figueroa as the "armed and dangerous" person of interest in the chaotic incident that unfolded at the renowned Crossroads of the World on Thursday evening. Authorities revealed that the teenager had arrived in the United States in September and had been residing temporarily at a shelter located in the Stratford Hotel on West 70th Street.
This recent arrest is not the young suspect's first encounter with the law, as he is also being connected to an armed robbery case in the Bronx that occurred on January 27. Additionally, he is a suspect in another incident involving gunfire in Midtown. According to Chief Chell, Rivas-Figueroa was considered to be armed and dangerous with a presumed ".45-caliber handgun," which is believed to be of significant size.
The incident that led to Rivas-Figueroa's arrest began at around 7 p.m. on Thursday when he reportedly opened fire with a ".45 caliber handgun" at JD Sports on West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue. A Brazilian tourist, aged 38, was struck in the leg during the shooting. The young suspect, accompanied by another 15-year-old boy, fled the scene, with Rivas-Figueroa allegedly firing shots at pursuing police officers as they made their escape towards West 46th Street.
Chief Chell expressed concern about Rivas-Figueroa's behavior, stating, "He had no problems firing into a crowd at a store... and not shooting at cops once, but shooting at them twice." He further emphasized the danger posed by the suspect's actions, highlighting the potential consequences if the bullets had struck one of the police officers. Chell commended the officers' restraint in not firing their weapons amidst a crowd of civilians.
The robbery at JD Sports also involved the theft of clothes from the store's second floor. A female security officer confronted Rivas-Figueroa and his companions, leading to a verbal exchange and ultimately the firing of shots into the crowd. Although the security officer was unharmed, an innocent shopper was struck above the knee, sustaining minor injuries.
Video footage captured Rivas-Figueroa and the other 15-year-old fleeing the scene. Law enforcement officers pursued them immediately, resulting in the capture of the second teenager. However, Rivas-Figueroa continued to evade authorities, even firing shots at an officer during the pursuit. The young suspect managed to elude apprehension by entering the 47th-50th Streets-Rockefeller Center station at Sixth Avenue, utilizing the subway tracks as a means of escape.
As investigations continue, officials are still working to determine the exact roles of the three teenage suspects involved in the incident. It was revealed that Rivas-Figueroa and the other two teens were acquainted and attended the same school. Chief Chell asserted that the police department's focus is solely on ensuring public safety and apprehending the armed and dangerous juvenile, regardless of his migrant status.
Photos obtained by The New York Post depicted Rivas-Figueroa being taken into custody on Friday. Clad in a dark T-shirt, jeans, and a gold necklace, the young suspect was seen at what sources described as the home of a relative or associate.
The incident has left the local community in shock, as scenes of violence in Times Square are rare occurrences. "No people come in trying to steal," said one employee, highlighting the uncharacteristic nature of the incident. The community's concern now lies in ensuring the safety of its residents and swiftly bringing justice to those responsible.
Authorities are committed to diligently pursuing all leads and continuing their investigation into this troubling incident.
