Niagara Falls, N.Y. - All four international border crossings between the United States and Canada in Western New York have been temporarily closed following a vehicle explosion at the Rainbow Bridge on Wednesday. The incident, which resulted in two fatalities, has prompted investigations by federal authorities and heightened security measures across the region.

Thick plumes of smoke engulfed the scene, as captured in a viewer video. According to CBS News, a car traveling at a high speed crashed into a pylon at the Rainbow Bridge crossing, triggering the explosion that claimed the lives of two individuals. The City of Niagara Falls, alongside the FBI's Buffalo Field Office, has designated the incident as an explosion.

Situated less than a mile from the world-famous Niagara Falls, the Rainbow Bridge connects the cities of Niagara Falls, USA and Niagara Falls, Canada. Offering stunning views of the magnificent natural wonder, the bridge has now become a site of investigation and security concern.

Following the incident, the Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, Whirlpool Bridge, and Rainbow Bridge have been closed in both directions, as confirmed by Ron Reinas, the general manager of the Peace Bridge. The closure of these border crossings has disrupted travel between the two countries.

The City of Niagara Falls has stated that federal authorities are currently investigating the situation. As a precautionary measure, the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and New York State Police are closely monitoring all points of entry to New York. New York Governor Kathy Hochul will be personally attending to matters in Western New York.

The impact of the incident has reached beyond the border crossings. The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is now subjecting every vehicle arriving at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport to thorough checks, leading to heavier-than-usual delays for travelers, according to the NFTA.

Niagara Falls State Park has been closed in response to the incident, with authorities emphasizing the need for public safety and security in the area.

In downtown Buffalo, the Rath Building, Old County Hall, and Family Court have closed early as a precautionary measure. County Executive Mark Poloncarz has assured the public that these measures are being implemented to prioritize safety.

Furthermore, the Jewish Community Center of Greater Buffalo, in coordination with law enforcement partners, has decided to temporarily close its buildings through the Thanksgiving Holiday. While there are no known credible threats against the Jewish community at this time, the precautionary action has been advised.

With investigations ongoing and security tightened, the closure of all Western New York border crossings serves as a reminder of the constant vigilance required to ensure public safety and to prevent any potential threats.
