In preparation for the upcoming Year of Prayer, the Vatican's Dicastery for Evangelisation has announced the release of a series of materials and prayer aids. The initiative aims to foster a deeper relationship with the Lord and provide moments of spiritual rest for believers.
Pope Francis described the Year of Prayer as an oasis, shielded from the daily stresses of life, where prayer becomes nourishment for the Christian life of faith, hope, and charity. The Dicastery's materials and prayer aids, which encompass a "symphony" of prayer forms, will be made available to the Christian community and individual believers.
Archbishop Rino Fisichella, President of the Dicastery for Evangelisation, emphasized that the Year of Prayer should not hinder local Church initiatives but rather serve as a foundation for all planned activities. He highlighted that the focus will be on providing suggestions and ideas to reinvigorate the prayer life of every baptized person.
To enhance understanding of the value of prayer, Archbishop Fisichella recommended two approaches. First, he encouraged believers to revisit the 38 catechetical talks given by Pope Francis between May 6, 2020, and June 16, 2021, as they contain numerous useful suggestions on various forms of prayer. Secondly, the Dicastery is preparing a series of volumes entitled "Notes on Prayer" that delve into the different dimensions of the Christian act of praying.
The series of eight volumes, published by the Vatican Publishing House, will be offered to Bishops' Conferences to aid the faithful in deepening their understanding of prayer. The first volume, titled "Praying Today. A Challenge to Be Overcome," authored by Cardinal Angelo Comastri, is now available in bookstores. It explores the necessity of prayer and offers teachings on having "a different gaze and a different heart," drawing inspiration from figures such as St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Francis of Assisi, and Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
Additionally, the Dicastery for Evangelisation will prepare pastoral aids, highlighting the various expressions of prayer in the community, family, for priests, cloistered nuns, sanctuaries, and young people. These aids will not introduce new prayers but aim to cultivate a greater awareness of the importance of daily prayer.
As part of the Year of Prayer, Pope Francis will establish a "School of Prayer," consisting of interactive sessions with different groups of people. These sessions will provide opportunities to pray together and deepen understanding of the various forms of prayer, ranging from thanksgiving to intercession, contemplative prayer to prayer of consolation, and from adoration to supplication.
The Vatican officials concluded by expressing their belief that the Year of Prayer, with its emphasis on prayer as the heart of hope, will be instrumental in the proclamation of the 2025 Jubilee during these challenging times. Bishops, priests, deacons, and catechists are expected to find appropriate ways to prioritize prayer in their ministries throughout the year.
