In a recent incident in the southern Red Sea, the USS Carney, an Arleigh-Burke class destroyer deployed as part of the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group, successfully shot down two Houthi drones and responded to a distress call from a civilian commercial vessel that was targeted by a ballistic missile. These events have further escalated tensions in the region, raising concerns about the potential expansion of the Israel-Hamas conflict.
According to a US defense official, the Carney intercepted and "destroyed" one Houthi drone while situated in the southern Red Sea. Simultaneously, the ship witnessed the firing of at least one ballistic missile towards a civilian commercial vessel, the M/V Unity Explorer. Responding promptly, the Carney rushed to the Unity Explorer's aid and managed to shoot down another Houthi drone that was approaching both ships.
Amidst these incidents, a US official has revealed that other commercial vessels were also targeted by Houthi missiles on the same day, although the exact number and identities of these vessels remain unclear. However, the official confirmed that the Carney successfully defended itself in at least two instances against attacking unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) while providing assistance.
Meanwhile, the Houthi-run Yemeni Armed Forces released a statement claiming responsibility for the attacks on what they referred to as "two Israeli ships" in the Bab al-Mandab strait of the Red Sea. The vessels in question, namely the Unity Explorer and Number Nine, allegedly ignored warning messages from the Yemeni naval forces, which led to their engagement with a naval missile and a drone, respectively. The statement emphasized their determination to hinder Israeli ships from navigating the Red and Arab seas until Israeli aggression against Gaza ceases.
These latest developments come in the wake of frequent missile and drone strikes launched by the Iran-backed Houthi forces towards Israel and US assets in the region. Last month, the USS Thomas Hudner successfully intercepted multiple attack drones from Yemen, while just a week ago, two ballistic missiles were fired at the USS Mason in the Gulf of Aden. Additionally, the Houthi forces have targeted US and coalition forces in Iraq and Syria.
It is important to note that US officials maintain that, despite these attacks, the Israel-Hamas conflict remains largely contained between the two parties. However, they acknowledge the opportunistic actions of Iranian proxies who attempt to exploit the situation for their own strategic goals.
In another related incident, the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group intercepted an Iranian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the Persian Gulf, after it was found to be operating in an unsafe and unprofessional manner. This event further adds to the tensions and underscores the volatile nature of the region.
As the situation evolves, concerns persist about the potential spillover of the Israel-Hamas conflict into neighboring regions. The successful interception of the Houthi drones by the USS Carney highlights US military capabilities in defending against these threats. However, the ongoing attacks serve as a reminder of the need for continued vigilance and diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and maintain stability in the region.
