A trove of documents related to the lawsuit involving convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein has been unsealed by a US federal court, shedding light on the vast network of associates and alleged victims connected to the disgraced financier. CNN has reviewed the documents, which include previously redacted names of Epstein's associates, accusers, and others associated with a civil case brought forth by one of the victims.
These newly unsealed documents, with more expected to be released on Thursday, stem from a 2015 civil suit filed by Virginia Giuffre, who claims to have been one of the many young girls trafficked by Epstein and his partner, Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell herself was found guilty of sex trafficking in 2021 and is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence.
While appearing in the documents does not imply wrongdoing, the depositions and testimony provided offer a glimpse into the elite circles that Epstein managed to navigate, even after his 2008 guilty plea on charges of soliciting an underage prostitute and subsequent registration as a sex offender. Among the well-known figures mentioned in the documents are former Presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, Britain's Prince Andrew, former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, French modeling scout Jean-Luc Brunel, American investor Glenn Dubin, and Leslie Wexner, the CEO of L Brands.
Both Clinton and Trump were mentioned in the depositions, but were not accused of any crimes. Clinton's spokesperson reaffirmed that the former president had flown on Epstein's private plane but denied knowledge of Epstein's criminal activities. The Trump campaign responded defensively, accusing the media of attempting to distract the public. Trump had previously stated that he severed ties with Epstein after banning him from Mar-a-Lago, without further elaboration.
Prince Andrew, who reached an out-of-court settlement with Giuffre in her sexual abuse lawsuit against him, has also denied all allegations. Dubin and Wexner have categorically denied any involvement in Epstein's crimes, with Wexner expressing embarrassment over his past association with the financier.
The documents also refer to three unidentified individuals, one of whom is described as an "unnamed prince," another as the "owner of a large hotel chain," and the third as an unidentified person. Two individuals using the pseudonym "J. Doe" have filed appeals to keep their identities sealed, with one granted an extension to provide evidence supporting their claim.
The release of these documents is just the first batch, with further releases anticipated in the coming days. The contents of these forthcoming documents and any new information they may bring to light remain unclear at this time.
