Edna, Texas - Rafael Govea Romero, a 23-year-old undocumented individual with an expired visa, has been charged with capital murder in the stabbing death of 16-year-old Edna High School cheerleader, Lizbeth Medina. The suspect, Romero, has been booked in the Jackson County Jail and was granted a $2 million bond.

Romero's arrest took place over the weekend in Schulenberg, Texas, approximately an hour northwest of Edna. Prior to his arrest, the Edna Police Department released surveillance photos of Romero, who was spotted wearing a black 'Volcom' hooded sweatshirt and driving a silver Ford Taurus, ranging from model years 2010-2018.

During the investigation, officers seized items of evidence from the silver Taurus, which have connected Romero to the murder. The authorities have not disclosed the nature of these items. The police also revealed that Lizbeth Medina had been stabbed to death.

On December 5, the tragic incident unfolded when Lizbeth's mother discovered her lifeless body in their apartment. Just a few weeks prior, their home had been broken into, leading her to wonder if there was a connection. Unfortunately, Lizbeth happened to be home at the time of the crime.

Jacqueline Medina, Lizbeth's mother, became concerned when her daughter failed to show up for the town's Lighted Christmas Parade, where she was scheduled to perform with her cheer squad. She rushed home only to make the horrifying discovery and immediately alerted the authorities. Despite the efforts of first responders, Lizbeth Medina was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tight-knit community of Edna, with a population of nearly 6,000 residents, has been left devastated by the tragic loss of the popular high school cheerleader. Local news outlets reached out to Lizbeth's family, who expressed their shock and stated that they did not recognize Romero at all.

As the investigation continues, Edna remains in mourning over the loss of one of their own. The tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers lurking within their seemingly peaceful town.
