In a tragic turn of events over the weekend, an Ukrainian rocket hit a bakery in the Russian-occupied city of Lysychansk, leading to the deaths of at least 28 people, including nine women and a child. The rocket strike, which occurred on Saturday, was allegedly conducted with a US-supplied shell, claimed the Russian-backed leaders in the occupied Luhansk region.
According to the Moscow-appointed official Leonid Pasechnik, the Adriatic Restaurant, which had a bakery set up for civilians, was directly hit by the rocket. The explosion resulted in the collapse of the building, trapping individuals under its rubble. Pasechnik stated that 10 people were quickly rescued from the debris, but unfortunately, 28 people lost their lives in the blast. By Sunday morning, four more individuals were pulled out from the wreckage, all in critical condition, as reported by Russia's emergency ministry.
The incident in Lysychansk comes amidst heightened tensions and a series of strikes between Ukraine and Russia over the past 24 hours. Ukraine's General Staff has warned that Russia has intensified its assaults along the front lines. In response, Ukraine has launched a series of counterattacks.
In another incident, one civilian was killed and two others were injured by Russian artillery fire targeting the border town of Toretsk, according to Donetsk regional Governor Vadym Filashkin. Additionally, Ukrainian officials stated that Russia conducted 16 separate shellings along northern communities.
Reports have also emerged of a drone strike conducted by Ukraine, hitting a major oil refinery in southwest Russia. The strike caused a fire and targeted a refinery owned by Lukoil, a prominent player in the Russian oil and gas industry. A Ukrainian source revealed, "By hitting oil refineries working for the Russian military-industrial complex, we not only cut off the logistics of fuel supplies for enemy equipment but also reduce the filling of the Russian budget."
While Russian officials have condemned the strike in Lysychansk, Ukrainian officials have yet to comment on the attack. The European Union recently agreed to allocate 50 billion euros to Kyiv, prompting Moscow's Foreign Ministry to use this incident as a warning to the EU regarding where their funding could potentially be utilized.
As the conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to escalate, the international community watches with growing concern, hoping for a resolution that will bring an end to the violence and suffering endured by both sides.
