Ukrainian prosecutors have launched an investigation into the alleged killing of two Ukrainian service members by Russian troops. The probe, under the supervision of the Ukraine prosecutor general's office, comes after a video of the incident was shared by the Ukrainian government on social media. The incident occurred near an observation post outside the village of Stepove near Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, according to a statement by the office.

"The killing of prisoners of war is a gross violation of the Geneva Conventions and is classified as a serious international crime," the statement read.

The Ukrainian military has asserted that the footage shows the execution of two prisoners of war. However, the authenticity of the video cannot be independently verified by CNN.

Russia has faced allegations of various crimes since its invasion of Ukraine, although the Kremlin has consistently denied any wrongdoing. Earlier this year, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin for his alleged involvement in a scheme to deport Ukrainian children to Russia.

Ukraine's authorities are actively investigating numerous criminal cases and war crimes, with approximately 3,000 cases involving children. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's human rights ombudsman, commented that the killing of the unarmed soldiers is not an isolated incident. Lubinets expressed confidence in the ability of Ukrainian law enforcement and intelligence agencies to identify the responsible Russian servicemen.

"I believe that our law enforcement and intelligence agencies will be able to identify the Russian servicemen who committed this crime," stated Lubinets.

This new investigation adds to the growing list of alleged violations committed by Russian troops in Ukraine, raising international concern and fueling tensions between the two neighboring countries. The search for justice and accountability continues as Ukraine seeks answers and aims to hold those responsible for the killings accountable.
