Charlotte, NC - Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) has made significant progress in their investigation into a series of car break-ins that have plagued the SouthPark, Myers Park, and Dilworth neighborhoods. Two suspects, including a juvenile whose identity will not be released and 19-year-old Hannah Jayna Freeman, are now in custody, while authorities continue to search for a third suspect.
The crimes occurred on December 14th and December 18th primarily in apartment complexes, with a total of 184 vehicles being targeted. In addition to the break-ins, numerous items were reported stolen from the vehicles.
On December 20th, CMPD successfully apprehended the juvenile suspect. Due to their age, no further details about their identity have been released. However, it is clear that they played a significant role in the string of car break-ins that took place.
The arrest of Freeman, on the other hand, did not come without a struggle. On December 19th, officers attempted to apprehend her, but she managed to evade them, speeding away in a stolen vehicle. However, on Tuesday, Freeman was taken into custody and now faces a plethora of charges, including felony larceny and breaking or entering a vehicle. Mecklenburg County jail records confirm her arrest.
Given the extensive nature of the crimes committed, investigators are not ruling out the involvement of additional individuals. CMPD is currently determining whether a third suspect was involved in the spree and actively searching for their whereabouts.
Residents in the affected neighborhoods can now have some peace of mind, knowing that two key suspects have been apprehended. However, authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police. They also encourage car owners to take precautionary measures such as locking their vehicles and removing valuable items from plain sight.
CMPD continues to collaborate with local news outlets, including Channel 9, to provide updates on the ongoing investigation. As more information becomes available regarding the arrest of the second suspect, Charlotte residents can rest assured that their safety remains a top priority for law enforcement.
