Washington, DC - In a shocking incident on Thursday morning, four individuals were shot, leaving two dead and two injured, after a suspect opened fire from a vehicle in Southwest DC, according to authorities. The shooting took place in the Nats Park area near the intersection of O Street and Half Street, as reported by the DC Police.
During a press conference held on Thursday, DC Police Chief Pamela Smith provided details about the incident. Chief Smith revealed that based on surveillance video, a suspect in a white Jeep Cherokee fired shots at the victims near a corner store. The vehicle in question was spotted having Maryland license plates with the registration number 2FD 0820. However, no description of the suspect has been released at this time.
Chief Smith further informed the media that the same vehicle is believed to have been involved in an armed carjacking in the Fourth District on Wednesday night. It is yet to be determined if there were additional occupants in the suspect's vehicle.
The two surviving victims have been rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Their current conditions remain unknown. Meanwhile, investigations are underway to ascertain the motive behind the shooting, and at this stage, no suspects have been taken into custody.
Chief Smith emphasized the need to address the issue of crew-based crimes while addressing the media. "In the past 30 days, we have not seen any violent crime in this area. Our officers are often present during events at the Nationals stadium and Audi stadium, which results in increased police presence in this area," said Chief Smith. "However, crew-based crimes are a concern, and we will continue to collaborate with our partners to tackle this problem."
As the investigation continues, the community remains on high alert, and authorities urge anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist law enforcement officials in their efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The tragic shooting incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the city in maintaining public safety. Discussions surrounding public safety bills are already underway in the DC Council, highlighting the urgency to implement effective strategies to combat crime and ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike.
Anyone with information related to the shooting incident is encouraged to contact the DC Police Department or provide an anonymous tip to the appropriate authorities.
