The coast guard reported that an unnamed mainland Chinese vessel had trespassed within approximately one nautical mile of the coast of Kinmen, a territory closer to mainland China than to Taiwan.

The pursuing coast patrol boat stated that while attempting to flee, the trespassing vessel capsized, leading four crew members to fall into the water. The coast guard promptly responded and managed to rescue two crew members. Additionally, two other crew members were found unconscious in the sea. Despite efforts to revive them, the two unconscious crew members were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

China's Taiwan Affairs Office strongly condemned the deaths and called on the Taiwan authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. The Chinese Communist Party considers Taiwan as part of its territory, although it has never ruled over the democratic island. Due to its geographical proximity, mainland Chinese vessels are frequently present in the waters near Kinmen.

The Taiwan Affairs Office expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that it "seriously hurt the feelings of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait during the Spring Festival" - also known as the Lunar New Year holiday, celebrated by both mainland China and Taiwan. The office further accused Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party of being the main reason for the incident, claiming that it used various excuses to forcefully seize mainland fishing boats and mistreat mainland fishermen.

Taiwan's coast guard has initiated an investigation into the incident, and the two rescued crew members have been brought to Kinmen. The coast guard authorities assured that they would establish contact with the fishermen's families through official channels to provide them with the necessary support.

This unfortunate event highlights the ongoing tension and territorial disputes surrounding the waters near Kinmen. As both sides continue to debate their claims over the region, further diplomatic efforts may be required to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
