Officials revealed that there may have been a mistaken identification, with US forces potentially confusing the enemy drone for an American one and allowing it to pass unchallenged.
According to a preliminary report cited by two anonymous officials, as the enemy drone flew in at a low altitude, a US drone was returning to the small installation called Tower 22. This convergence of events resulted in no action being taken to shoot down the enemy drone, which subsequently struck the outpost. The impact was most severe on one of the sleeping trailers, while surrounding trailers suffered limited damage from the blast and debris.
The Pentagon confirmed that in addition to the three soldiers killed, over 40 troops were wounded in the attack. The injuries varied, with most soldiers sustaining cuts, bruises, brain injuries, and similar wounds. Eight soldiers were medically evacuated, including three who were being transported to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. The remaining five, who suffered minor brain injuries, were expected to return to duty.
The Pentagon spokesperson, Sabrina Singh, when asked about the failure to shoot down the enemy drone, responded that the US Central Command is currently assessing the matter to determine if it was a result of "human error."
The three soldiers who tragically lost their lives in the attack have been identified as Sergeant William Jerome Rivers, 46, of Carrollton, Georgia; Specialist Kennedy Ladon Sanders, 24, of Waycross, Georgia; and Specialist Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, 23, of Savannah, Georgia. The loss of these brave individuals has brought immense grief and mourning to their communities and the nation.
As the investigation unfolds, the White House announced that it is not seeking war with Iran, even as President Joe Biden vows retaliatory action. The administration believes that Iran was responsible for the attack, creating a delicate balancing act for President Biden as he seeks to respond forcefully without further escalating tensions amidst the ongoing Gaza conflict.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by US forces stationed in volatile regions, highlighting the need for constant vigilance and robust air defense systems. The incident will likely prompt a thorough review of protocols and procedures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
