In a recent development, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has taken control of Shelby Park in the border town of Eagle Pass as part of his homegrown immigration enforcement operation. The park, located along the U.S. side of the Rio Grande, has been seized by the state's forces, according to an announcement made by Eagle Pass Mayor Rolando Salinas in a Facebook video.
Mayor Salinas expressed his displeasure in the video and made it clear that the city did not request or desire this action. He revealed that he received a call from a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) official on Wednesday morning, informing him that the state was taking "full control" of the park indefinitely.
The video posted by Mayor Salinas shows military vehicles lined up along a chain link fence that was erected at an entrance to Shelby Park. The move signifies the implementation of stronger security measures in response to the ongoing immigration situation at the border.
Abbott's spokesperson, Renae Eze, stated that Texas is bolstering border security with additional razor wire, anti-climb barriers, and the deployment of Texas National Guard soldiers and DPS troopers. These measures are being taken in response to what the governor believes to be record-high levels of illegal immigration, which he attributes to President Biden's open border policies.
The action comes amidst an ongoing border crisis and heightened concerns about immigration management. Governor Abbott's decision to seize control of a public park reflects the state's determination to actively respond to the situation.
It remains to be seen how long Texas will maintain control of Shelby Park and what impact this will have on immigration enforcement efforts in the border community of Eagle Pass.
