In a significant development surrounding the baseless claims of election fraud, ten Republican "fake electors" in Wisconsin have settled a civil lawsuit by admitting that President Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election was legitimate. The individuals agreed to cooperate with the Department of Justice (DOJ) in relation to other ongoing cases.

As part of their efforts to overturn the election, Republicans in seven swing states, including Wisconsin, submitted false slates of electors to Congress, based on former President Donald Trump's discredited conspiracy theory of election theft by fraud. Despite these claims being repeatedly rejected by courts and legal experts, the ten individuals persisted in their false filings.

However, in the recent settlement, the ten fake electors acknowledged their involvement in an attempt to improperly overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Wisconsin. As part of the agreement, they withdrew the false filings they had sent to Congress, falsely claiming that Trump had won the state.

Importantly, the fake electors also pledged their cooperation with any ongoing or future DOJ investigations and prosecutions related to the individuals accused of breaking the law in their attempt to obstruct Biden's election victory. No damages, attorney fees, or admission of liability were required as part of the settlement.

The Wisconsin case was initiated by a group of Democrats who had also sued two of Trump's attorneys. Meanwhile, in an unrelated case in Georgia, attorney Kenneth Chesebro, who was involved in a similar election-related lawsuit, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit filing false documents.

Renowned law professor Ryan Goodman, writing on X (previously Twitter), noted that this settlement strengthens Special Counsel Jack Smith's federal election meddling case against Trump. Goodman emphasized that the ten fake electors' statement to legal authorities aligns with Smith's theory of the case, implicating Trump, Chesebro, and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani in potential legal troubles.

A statement from former Wisconsin state Republican Chairman Andrew Hitt, one of the fake electors, indicated that they had been misled by individuals behind the scheme. Hitt claimed they were under the impression that their actions were contingent on court victories and solely intended to keep legal options open for the Trump campaign.

In a separate development, on the same day, six Republican fake electors in Nevada were charged with "offering a false instrument for filing" and "uttering a forged instrument." Criminal charges were also filed against fake electors in Michigan and Georgia, with the case in Georgia encompassing broader election interference charges that include Trump, who has pleaded not guilty to 13 charges.

The settlement of the Wisconsin lawsuit and the cooperation pledge by the ten fake electors could have far-reaching implications in ongoing investigations and legal proceedings surrounding the false claims of election fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
