LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - An early morning incident in Las Vegas on Wednesday led to a chaotic series of events involving a suspect who stole a police patrol vehicle, carjacked multiple vehicles, and engaged in confrontation with officers, ultimately resulting in the suspect's death.
The incident began around 3:45 am in the area of Blue Diamond Road and Durango Drive when shots were fired, prompting a response from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD). While bullets struck at least one police car, no officers were injured in the initial incident.
According to LVMPD Captain Joshua Martinez, the suspect managed to steal the patrol vehicle and fled the scene. Officers pursued the stolen vehicle to the 7300 block of south Durango, where the suspect proceeded to carjack the first of three vehicles.
The suspect then led police to the 8500 block of Durango, where he seized another vehicle. Officers observed the suspect allegedly threatening the driver with a gun, prompting them to open fire. The suspect managed to steal the second vehicle and fled once again.
Continuing the spree, the suspect carjacked a third vehicle at Durango and Windmill before being located by Nevada State Police at the scene. An LVMPD officer arrived shortly after and encountered the suspect, who allegedly fired a shot that caused injury to the citizen in the vehicle.
In response, officers opened fire on the stolen vehicle, striking it multiple times. Despite being hit, the suspect continued to drive, leading authorities on a pursuit that concluded at Durango and Agate when the stolen vehicle malfunctioned.
Faced with an uncooperative suspect, the Las Vegas Metro Police Department SWAT team and crisis negotiators were summoned to the scene. After determining that there was no movement within the vehicle, SWAT officers approached and, with medical assistance, confirmed that the suspect was deceased.
Thankfully, no officers were injured during the ordeal. The condition of the carjacking victim who suffered injuries has not been released at this time.
As part of standard protocol, the LVMPD will be releasing the names of the officers involved in the incident over the course of the next two days. Currently, there are no details regarding the identity of the deceased suspect.
The investigation into the officer-involved shooting and multi-vehicle carjacking is ongoing, and authorities will work to gather any additional information available to piece together the events that unfolded early Wednesday morning in Las Vegas.
