New Orleans, LA - A Southwest Airlines passenger was hospitalized after a mental health episode prompted him to open an emergency exit door and jump from the plane while it was still on the tarmac at Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday night around 7:40 p.m., was captured on a dramatic cell phone video. The aircraft, attached to the skyway and at the gate, was preparing for departure when passengers rushed to disembark after the man's unexpected actions.

According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, the unidentified 38-year-old man climbed out onto the plane's wing before leaping to the ground. Quick action from ground personnel led to his capture near the aircraft, and he was subsequently held until police arrived.

Authorities described the man as incoherent and not fully aware of his surroundings. Concerned for his well-being, he was promptly taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Law enforcement officials stated that they believe the man was experiencing a mental health emergency.

No evidence was found to suggest that the man left any belongings behind on the plane, and he was not found to be in possession of any weapons, according to the police.

As of Monday, the man remains hospitalized, and it is reported that he will not face criminal charges locally. However, the investigation has been referred to federal authorities for further examination.

Due to the incident, the Southwest flight scheduled for that evening was canceled, inconveniencing the passengers and causing further delays.

Airline officials have not commented on the incident, but passengers on the flight expressed shock and concern over the situation. Many were relieved that the man was apprehended quickly and that no one else was harmed during the incident.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the need for proper support and resources for individuals experiencing mental health emergencies.
