Omaha, NE - A tragic single-vehicle crash on Sunday morning in Ralston resulted in the loss of one life. The Omaha Fire Department (OFD) was called to the scene where they extinguished an engine fire caused by the crash. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was identified as Alfredo Garcia Hidalgo, 30, according to the Omaha police.
The incident occurred at approximately 5 a.m. when Garcia Hidalgo was traveling northbound on U Street near 99th Street. Police believe his car veered off the roadway, colliding with a curb and becoming airborne before ultimately crashing head on into a large tree.
In response to the accident, the police immediately closed the area, causing traffic disruptions for several hours. However, all streets have since been reopened to the public.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, as authorities work to determine what factors may have contributed to the tragic accident.
Eyewitness Susan Sanchez, who resides in the nearby apartment complex, was awakened by the loud noise of the car colliding with the tree. Initially assuming it was a vehicle in the parking lot or a dump truck, Sanchez quickly realized the severity of the situation when she noticed blinking lights near the crash site. She promptly alerted her husband to call 911.
Expressing her deep sadness over the tragic outcome, Sanchez shared, "I'm very sad he passed away. I mean no life should be wasted." Acting with bravery, Sanchez rushed to the vehicle to assist Garcia Hidalgo, unaware that he had already succumbed to his injuries. She desperately attempted to rescue him, calling out if he was alive or in need of help, but received no response. As the flames grew stronger, Sanchez raised her voice and sought assistance from others.
Sanchez also revealed that this was not the first accident she has witnessed caused by drivers crossing over the hill near her apartment complex, emphasizing the need for careful driving in the area.
As the community mourns the loss of Alfredo Garcia Hidalgo, the Omaha police continue their investigation into this tragic incident. It serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible and cautious driving to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.
