Search efforts are ongoing for a woman who vanished into a partially frozen river in Alaska over the weekend. The incident took place near the Eagle River on Saturday when a couple, who were walking their dogs, found themselves in a distressing situation.
According to Alaska state troopers, one of their dogs entered the water, prompting the couple to enter the river to search for their beloved pet. However, during the search, the woman mysteriously disappeared. Authorities were immediately notified, but as darkness fell on Saturday evening, the search had to be halted.
Despite the best efforts of a dive rescue team on Sunday, they were unable to locate the missing woman. The incident occurred in a section of the partially frozen river located approximately 20 miles (32km) outside of Anchorage, an area known for experiencing limited daylight in late December with only about 5 and a half hours of sunlight per day.
The search is scheduled to resume on Tuesday with the sunrise. In addition to the dive team, the Alaska Solstice Search Dogs will join the operation to enhance the search efforts, as mentioned in a Facebook post.
Austin McDaniel, a spokesperson for the Alaska state troopers, expressed the belief that the woman "was swept underneath the ice downriver." It is unclear at this time what specific circumstances led to her disappearance.
It is important to note that the man who entered the water with the missing woman did not sustain any injuries during the incident.
Reacting to the tragic situation, Jamie Allard, a representative in the Alaska state legislature for the area, called the incident a "heartbreaking tragedy."
As the search for the missing woman continues, authorities are committed to leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to find her and provide answers to this perplexing disappearance.
