Sacramento police and the FBI have launched an investigation into a bomb threat that specifically referenced the 2023 Run to Feed the Hungry event, a highly anticipated fundraiser for the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. The threat, received by police via email on November 13, has prompted authorities to take decisive action to ensure the safety of participants and spectators at the event on Thanksgiving Day.

In response to the threat, the Sacramento Police Department will increase its presence at the run, implementing enhanced safety measures and security protocols. Police Chief Kathy Lester emphasized that the safety of all individuals involved in the event is their top priority. Concurrently, the FBI is actively working with the local police department to evaluate the credibility of the threat and conduct a thorough investigation.

While no specific details on the sender of the threatening email have been released, Special Agent in Charge Sean Ragan of the FBI Sacramento Field Office reassured the public of their commitment to the community's safety. He urged the public to report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement, emphasizing the importance of collective vigilance in protecting both individuals and the greater Sacramento community.

Blake Young, president & CEO of the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services, expressed their hope to proceed with the in-person event. They have received assurances from the Sacramento Police Department regarding the increased presence on Thanksgiving Day. However, Young emphasized that the safety of staff, volunteers, participants, and the community remains their utmost priority. The decision to proceed in person will depend on their confidence in being able to ensure a secure environment for all involved.

The Run to Feed the Hungry is not only a significant charitable event but also the biggest fundraiser of the year for the food bank. Tens of thousands of people typically participate in the run, helping to raise vital funds to support their mission. However, in light of the bomb threat, organizers are also offering a virtual participation option for those who may not be able to join in person.

As the investigation continues, authorities and organizers will provide updates and additional information as it becomes available. The collective effort to maintain community safety remains a top priority for all involved, and the determination to support the important work of the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services through the Run to Feed the Hungry event remains undeterred.
