Russian street artist Philippenzo, also known as Filipp Kozlov, has recently unveiled his latest artwork titled "Russian Rainbow." The canvas, featuring six horizontal stripes reminiscent of the LGBT flag, is adorned with the colors of the Russian tricolour. However, due to his ongoing legal challenges, Philippenzo is currently living abroad, evading charges of vandalism.

In an interview with Novaya Europe, Philippenzo explained that, like his previous works, the concept for "Russian Rainbow" spontaneously came to him. He stated, "I don't set out to paint a specific topic. I just convey the images that appear in my head." Furthermore, he commented on the ban imposed by the authorities, claiming that by targeting their vulnerable internal opposition, the regime has revealed its own remarkable weakness.

Known for his anti-war graffiti, Philippenzo's previous creation, "Izrossilovanie," which plays on the words for Russian and rape, appeared in Moscow on Russia Day, June 12th. However, this artwork quickly drew the attention of the police, who promptly paid Philippenzo a visit.

Following his anti-war piece, Philippenzo faced legal repercussions. In both July and August, he received two separate sentences of 15 days of administrative arrest for insubordination towards a police officer. Additionally, he was slated to be charged with "discrediting the army." In September, his home was searched in connection to an ongoing "vandalism" case. Faced with mounting pressure, Philippenzo made the decision to leave Russia for Lithuania in early October. Consequently, he was placed on the Interior Ministry's wanted list.

Recent events further compounded the challenges faced by the artist. The Supreme Court of Russia recently ruled that the "International LGBT Movement" should be deemed "extremist," thereby effectively outlawing it.

As Philippenzo showcases his latest artwork while grappling with legal troubles, his "Russian Rainbow" serves as a powerful symbol amidst the backdrop of ongoing debates surrounding freedom of expression and rights in Russia. It remains to be seen how the authorities will respond to this latest artistic creation and whether Philippenzo will continue to face legal ramifications for his work.
