Russian forces are making significant advancements towards the town of Avdiivka in Ukraine, according to a war map published by the Institute for the Study of War. The situation is being described as a "critical time" for Kyiv, as there is a genuine threat of losing control over Avdiivka. Ukrainian journalist Yuriy Butusov has reported that Russian forces have managed to cross a railway line and establish a foothold near the town.
The conflict in Avdiivka has been ongoing since 2014, following Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea. Beginning on October 10, Russia intensified its offensive on the frontline town, deploying thousands of troops, tanks, and armored vehicles. Avdiivka has been considered a gateway to the city of Donetsk, making it a strategically significant location.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, describing it as "particularly tough." The situation is further supported by a prior intelligence report from the British Defense Ministry, which stated that Russia's offensive to seize Avdiivka has resulted in a 90 percent increase in Russian casualties reported by Ukraine military officials.
The war map released by the Institute for the Study of War indicates Russian advances around Avdiivka. According to the map, Russian forces have made progress near Krasnohorivka, Sieverne, and southern Avdiivka. Butusov also reported that Russian troops have crossed the railway line near the village of Stepove and are preparing to assault a strategic plant in Avdiivka. The fall of the plant could potentially lead to the capture of the city.
However, Butusov also highlighted that Ukrainian troops have been successful in combat operations within the city of Avdiivka itself. The 110th mechanized brigade has effectively repelled Russian attacks, regained several positions previously held by the enemy, and even improved their positions in certain areas. At present, the journalist noted that there is no immediate threat of the Russian forces entering the city.
Amid the escalating tensions and potential for further conflict, the situation in Avdiivka remains a significant concern for Ukraine. The loss of control over the town could have serious implications for Ukraine's security and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
