Protesters demanding a cease-fire in the Israeli war in Gaza have locked themselves to a U.S. military supply ship leaving the Port of Oakland, effectively blocking its departure. The demonstration, organized by the San Francisco-based Arab Resource Organizing Center, took place at Berth 20 where the container carrier Cape Orlando is moored. Protest groups allege that the ship is loaded with weapons and military equipment bound for Israel after being loaded in Tacoma, Washington.
Approximately 200 people participated in the protest, brandishing Palestinian flags and holding signs calling for an end to U.S. military aid to Israel. The demonstration commenced at 6:45 a.m., causing no disruption to other cargo handling activities at the Port of Oakland, according to a spokesperson.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Oakland Police, U.S. Coast Guard, and the Port of Oakland, closely monitored the situation to ensure a peaceful protest. As of Friday 2 p.m., no arrests had been made.
The blockade of the military supply ship highlights the growing concerns and calls for action from pro-Palestinian groups in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. With tensions escalating, protesters are demanding an immediate end to the violence, urging the United States to cease its military support to Israel.
The Port of Oakland remains operational despite the protest, emphasizing its commitment to uninterrupted cargo handling activities. It is yet to be determined how long the blockade will persist and its impact on the vessel's scheduled departure. The demonstration serves as a visible expression of solidarity with the Palestinian cause as international pressure continues to mount for a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.
