Late Sunday night, authorities announced that a Portland schoolteacher, identified only as "Bob," has found the missing door plug from the Alaska Airlines flight that experienced a midair emergency. This discovery could potentially provide vital clues to investigators about what caused the hole in the fuselage on the Boeing 737-9 Max aircraft during a flight from Oregon to Southern California.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) expressed their satisfaction with Bob's discovery and stated that they will thoroughly analyze the door plug to gather crucial data. Although the initial pictures show only the white portions of the door plug, the NTSB Chairwoman, Jennifer Homendy, emphasized the importance of careful examination.
Additionally, two cellphones belonging to passengers that fell out of the plane during the incident have been recovered. Surprisingly, some of their functions appear to be intact. A verified image shows one cellphone displaying a passenger's luggage receipt for the flight.
The door plug became dislodged when the plane was flying at an altitude of 16,000 feet. Authorities have noted the fortunate timing of the event, as passengers were still required to have their seatbelts fastened. The flight promptly turned back and made an emergency landing in Oregon, avoiding any serious injuries. Passengers, however, recounted a chaotic scene during the initial depressurization, with personal belongings and phones being sucked out of the hole.
The Boeing 737-9 Max model is equipped with an additional emergency exit, mainly utilized by foreign airlines that accommodate more passengers and seats on their flights. However, carriers like Alaska Airlines and United Airlines, which configure their Max 9s with fewer than 180 seats, do not require the extra exits to comply with U.S. evacuation rules. Instead, they use a door plug to cover the opening.
The incident has raised concerns among some passengers, particularly regarding the safety of air travel, especially on Boeing jets. Sharleen Gill, a passenger at Hollywood Burbank Airport, expressed her discontent, calling the incident "unacceptable" and emphasizing the need for airlines to ensure the proper functioning of all aircraft components.
As the investigation continues, the discovery of the missing door plug by the Portland teacher offers hope that crucial insights will be gained into the midair emergency, ultimately leading to enhanced safety measures in the aviation industry.
