Oneonta, Alabama - A police officer was shot and a suspect killed during a call for service in an Oneonta neighborhood on Monday. The incident occurred in the area of Sand Valley Road, where Oneonta police responded to a report of a suspicious person knocking on the doors of homes.

Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon stated that upon the arrival of the officers, the suspect fled into a nearby wooded area, prompting a pursuit by the police. A brief standoff ensued in the woods, during which the suspect brandished a weapon and shots were exchanged between the suspect and law enforcement.

As a result of the exchange of gunfire, an Oneonta police officer was injured in the leg and immediately airlifted to UAB Hospital. The officer's condition is currently stable, and he is expected to recover.

Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey confirmed that the suspect succumbed to his injuries at the scene. No further details about the suspect were provided.
