In a recent development, health officials have revealed that a food handler at an Olive Garden restaurant located in Deptford, New Jersey, has tested positive for hepatitis A. The announcement was made by Gloucester County health officials on Thursday.

The Gloucester County Department of Health conducted an inspection on March 17, 2023, and found the restaurant to have a satisfactory rating. A re-inspection was conducted on Wednesday, which again resulted in a satisfactory rating. Authorities stated that they are working closely with both the New Jersey Department of Health and the restaurant to ensure the safety and well-being of the public.

According to a spokesperson from Olive Garden, the infected employee last worked 10 days prior to being diagnosed and will remain away from work until officially cleared by a doctor. The company has not been made aware of any other employees or customers falling ill.

The health department emphasized that the health and safety of guests and staff members are their top priorities. Olive Garden maintains stringent protocols to maintain clean and safe restaurants.

Hepatitis A symptoms usually appear between 2 to 7 weeks after exposure. Health officials have advised that individuals who have previously received the hepatitis A vaccine are not at risk. However, those who are unsure of their vaccine status are urged to contact their healthcare provider.

While the risk for those who are not vaccinated is relatively low, health officials advise that it is not entirely absent. They recommend getting the vaccine within two weeks of exposure to potentially mitigate any potential infection. To ensure the safety of all patrons, the Gloucester County Department of Health is working directly with the establishment to provide vaccinations to potentially exposed and unvaccinated co-workers.

As the investigation unfolds, health authorities continue to closely monitor the situation and take necessary measures to prevent any further spread of the disease. It is crucial for individuals who may have been exposed to remain vigilant and seek medical advice if they experience any symptoms related to hepatitis A.

Overall, public health officials are actively working towards minimizing the impact of this incident and protecting the community from any potential health risks.
