WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Connecticut Office of the Inspector General has released a preliminary report and body camera footage of last week's officer-involved shooting in West Haven. The incident occurred early in the morning of Friday, [Date], when police responded to a report of a domestic complaint at an apartment on Terrace Avenue.

According to the report, officers arrived at the scene around 1:55 a.m. where they encountered a woman who alleged that 33-year-old Jovan Washington had attempted to strangle her and had prevented her from leaving the apartment. Body camera footage showed officers entering a bedroom to speak with Washington and inform him that he would be taken into custody. They also asked him if he wanted to put on a pair of pants.

However, as Washington got out of bed and moved towards a closet, authorities stated that he suddenly turned and reached for a gun that was hidden under the mattress. A struggle then ensued, during which Washington fired a single shot, striking Officer Cody Bacon in the leg. In response, Officer Alex Triscritti fired multiple rounds, ultimately striking Washington.

Both Washington and Officer Bacon were immediately transported to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, Washington was pronounced dead upon arrival, while Officer Bacon underwent treatment for his leg injury. Fortunately, he was released from the hospital on Saturday, [Date].

The Office of Inspector General, along with the Milford State Attorney's Office and the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Squad, are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. Their findings will shed light on the circumstances that led to the shooting and determine whether any further actions or charges are warranted.

As the investigation continues, the community and law enforcement agencies hope for a swift and transparent resolution to this unfortunate incident. The development of the case will be closely monitored, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
