In a recent annual risk report, Norway's intelligence service issued a stark warning about Russia's increasing advantage in the ongoing war in Ukraine. Nils Andreas Stensones, the head of the military intelligence unit, highlighted Russia's bolstered troop numbers, as well as the substantial material support it has received from countries such as China and North Korea.

Stensones emphasized that Russia's forces now hold a stronger position than they did a year ago. The intelligence chief revealed that Moscow could potentially mobilize three times more troops than Ukraine, adding that Russia has been handling sanctions surprisingly well. Additionally, Russia's arms industry has made significant strides in its production capabilities, enabling it to equip its troops with an ample supply of munitions, combat vehicles, drones, and missiles throughout the year.

The report also underscored that Russia has garnered military support from countries like North Korea, Iran, Belarus, and China. While China has not directly supplied arms, it has provided crucial machinery, vehicles, electronics, and spare parts required by Russia's arms industry.

To counter Russia's dominance and enable Ukrainian forces to defend themselves effectively and regain the initiative in the conflict, the report stressed that extensive Western weapons aid would be necessary. The Ukrainian government has specifically requested support in the form of munitions, long-distance weapons, air defense systems, tanks, and fighter jets.

Reacting to the alarming situation, Norwegian Defense Minister Bjorn Arild Gram called on Norway and Europe to shoulder more responsibility in ensuring their own security and that of their allies. The United States has been a significant military donor to Ukraine since Russia's invasion in February 2022. However, Congress has been unable to reach an agreement on providing new aid, and the potential return of Donald Trump to the White House has further intensified the need for Europe to step up its assistance.

The report's findings highlight the urgency of the situation in Ukraine, with Russia becoming increasingly powerful and well-equipped. As tensions continue to escalate, the international community must carefully assess the risks and determine the necessary actions to support Ukraine and its quest for stability and security.
