In a heartwarming display of solidarity and support, the North Cedar community rallied around Brianna Sauer, an elementary school paraeducator fighting brain cancer, during a high school basketball game in Cedar County.

Sauer, who works at Mechanicsville Elementary School, was diagnosed with Squamous Skin Cancer in her neck in February 2023. She underwent rigorous treatments, including radiation and chemotherapy. Unfortunately, on Christmas Eve, she received the devastating news that the cancer had spread to her brain stem, accompanied by a second cancerous tumor. Since then, Sauer has bravely undergone brain surgery and additional radiation.

On January 26th, during the basketball game between North Cedar and Midland, the North Cedar Community School District showcased their unwavering support for Sauer. The event featured special t-shirts and jerseys, and a silent auction with an impressive 54 baskets filled with numerous items up for bidding. The funds raised through the auction will help Sauer cover travel expenses and future treatments.

Expressing her gratitude, Sauer said, "It is humbling to see everyone in this community stand behind me, and I am beyond grateful." The outpouring of support from students, faculty, and community members has undoubtedly been a source of strength and encouragement for Sauer during her difficult journey.

Adding to the community's efforts, two local companies, Timmerman Farms and Blackstone Installation, pledged to donate $10 for every free throw made by both the girls' and boys' basketball teams. This generous gesture further demonstrated the unity and compassion displayed by the North Cedar community.

Donations for the Sauer family can be made at any school within the North Cedar Community School District. The community's response highlights the power of collective action and showcases the depth of care and empathy within the North Cedar community.

As Sauer continues her fight against cancer, the North Cedar community stands alongside her, offering unwavering support and strength. Their actions exemplify the true meaning of community, reminding us all of the power of unity in times of adversity.
