A multi-vehicle crash on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge resulted in the closure of all lanes for over five hours on Saturday, causing significant traffic congestion, as reported by authorities. The westbound span of the bridge was reopened at approximately 2 p.m. EST, as stated by The Baltimore Sun.
According to the Maryland Transportation Authority, the chain-reaction crash on the westbound span involved a total of 23 vehicles. Additionally, secondary crashes involving another 20 vehicles occurred on the bridge, as per WBFF-TV.
During the closure of the westbound lanes, police implemented alternating traffic on the eastbound span of the bridge to alleviate congestion, as reported by WBAL-TV.
WBAL reported that two individuals sustained serious injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals. Eleven others were also hospitalized, although their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department issued a Facebook post earlier in the day urging motorists to avoid the area, confirming that they had responded to the multi-vehicle crash on the westbound span.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge, also known as the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bridge, is a vital part of U.S. 50/301, connecting Maryland's Eastern Shore with Baltimore, Annapolis, and Washington, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority's website.
All lanes of the Bay Bridge, both eastbound and westbound, have now been reopened following the crash, restoring normal traffic flow.
This incident serves as a reminder for motorists to exercise caution and adhere to all safety regulations when traveling on busy bridges and highways.
