In an incident on Saturday, a military projectile was discovered near a bandstand in Medford, as reported by the Massachusetts State Police. The ordnance was located at the Condon Shell, situated within the Mystic River Reservation off the Mystic Valley Parkway (Route 16).

Photographs shared by the state police suggest that the projectile is a mortar shell. As a precautionary measure, state police troopers, as well as members of the MSP Bomb Squad, promptly responded to the scene. They were joined by local Medford police officers and firefighters.

For the safety of the public, the west side of the Mystic Valley Parkway was temporarily closed between Main and Winthrop streets. However, the road has since been reopened, allowing normal traffic flow in the area.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m., Medford police announced that the military device had been successfully removed from the scene. After thorough examination, it was determined to be inert, meaning it posed no further threat.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of public safety and the swift response of law enforcement agencies in handling potentially dangerous situations. The Massachusetts State Police are commended for their efficient cooperation with local authorities, ensuring the smooth and secure resolution of the situation.

Residents and visitors are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious items or activities to the appropriate authorities.
