VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI - An 84-year-old man from Southwest Michigan is in the hospital with serious injuries after being trapped underneath a bulldozer on Friday, October 27. The incident occurred at a workshop located in the 2600 block of 60th Avenue in Antwerp Township, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities received a call for help around 4:20 p.m. on Friday. Upon arrival, they found the elderly man lying on his back with his left arm stuck under the track of the bulldozer. It was determined that the man had been working alone on the bulldozer when it slipped into gear, pinning him underneath.
Remarkably, the man was able to use his free arm to reach for his cell phone and call his wife, who promptly contacted emergency services. A search ensued to locate the man on the large property, and authorities finally found him after hearing his cries for help.
Responders from the Mattawan Fire Department and Rob's Towing, a local towing agency, arrived at the scene. With their equipment, they managed to lift the bulldozer and free the man's arm. He was then transported by ambulance to a hospital in Kalamazoo for treatment of his serious injuries.
As of Saturday morning, there is no update on the man's condition. However, Sergeant Greg Pentland of the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office mentioned that the man was alert and oriented when he was rescued.
Accidents involving heavy machinery are always concerning, and this incident serves as a reminder to prioritize safety measures when working alone. The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Our thoughts are with the injured man and his family during this difficult time, as we hope for his speedy recovery.
