A 59-year-old man from Millis, Massachusetts has been arrested and charged for allegedly making threatening calls to members of the Jewish community and Jewish-affiliated organizations. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, John Reardon is accused of making chilling statements targeting the Congregation Agudas Achim synagogue in Attleboro and other Jewish entities.
Reardon has been charged with one count of using a facility of interstate commerce to threaten a person or place with harm via an explosive device. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison for this offense. Reardon is expected to be arraigned in Boston federal court on Monday.
According to court documents, on the morning of January 24, Reardon left a voicemail at the Congregation Agudas Achim synagogue. In the message, he made alarming remarks, including threats of violence towards the Jewish community. The voicemail contained statements such as, "You do realize that by supporting genocide that means it's OK for people to commit genocide against you," and, "If you can bomb their places of worship we can bomb yours, if you can kill their children we can kill yours."
Within just 10 minutes of leaving the threatening message at the synagogue, Reardon also called another synagogue and a Jewish-affiliated organization. Law enforcement officials promptly responded to the calls and subsequently arrested Reardon.
The charges against Reardon highlight the serious nature of the threats made towards religious communities. The U.S. Attorney's Office has emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens and will prosecute those who engage in such hateful behavior.
The Jewish community and affiliated organizations have expressed concern over the incident and appreciate the swift response from law enforcement agencies. Instances of hate and discrimination have no place in society, and community members stand united against such acts.
As the case progresses, authorities will focus on gathering evidence and ensuring a fair legal process. The arrest of John Reardon serves as a reminder that threats to any community will be taken seriously, and law enforcement remains vigilant in protecting the safety and security of all individuals.
