Title: Manhunt Intensifies as $80,000 in Reward Money Offered for Capture of Suspect in Deputy Shooting
In Blount County, Tennessee, law enforcement officials are actively searching for 42-year-old Kenneth DeHart, who is accused of fatally shooting one sheriff's deputy and injuring another during a routine traffic stop. As the manhunt continues, the reward for information leading to DeHart's arrest has now surpassed $80,000.
Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong confirmed the substantial reward money in a statement, emphasizing the determination of law enforcement to bring DeHart to justice. Warrants have been issued for DeHart on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and felon in possession of a firearm.
The tragic incident occurred when Deputy Greg McCowan, 43, was shot and killed during the traffic stop. Deputy Shelby Eggers, 22, was also injured but has since been treated and released from the hospital. Berrong expressed his condolences and vowed to apprehend DeHart, affirming that he will be held accountable for his actions.
Authorities provided further details of the altercation, stating that deputies had initiated the traffic stop due to DeHart's alleged erratic driving. Despite repeated attempts to get him to exit the vehicle, DeHart refused, and the use of a stun gun proved ineffective. DeHart then produced a firearm and fired shots, striking both deputies. In response, at least one deputy returned fire. DeHart managed to flee the scene and remains at large.
In an unexpected turn of events, DeHart's brother has been arrested and charged as an accessory for allegedly aiding the suspect after the shooting. He is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. Additionally, reports indicate that a woman believed to be DeHart's girlfriend has been arrested on an accessory charge in a neighboring county.
To aid in the search, the Blount County Sheriff's office has warned residents in the Wildwood area of a significant law enforcement presence during an upcoming non-tactical ground search. The community has been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
As the manhunt intensifies, a procession of law enforcement vehicles accompanied the hearse carrying Deputy McCowan's body through Maryville, a solemn tribute to the fallen officer. McCowan had recently started his law enforcement career in 2020 after completing training.
The Blount County Sheriff's office, along with other local law enforcement agencies, continues to work tirelessly to locate and apprehend Kenneth DeHart. With the substantial reward on offer, they are urging anyone with information to come forward and help bring closure to this devastating incident.
