In a shocking incident that was captured on a courtroom video and later went viral, a man who leaped over a judicial bench and attacked a Nevada judge during a sentencing hearing in Las Vegas has now been indicted for attempted murder. The grand jury returned a nine-count indictment against 30-year-old Deobra Redden in Las Vegas on Thursday, with his arraignment scheduled for February 29th.

The incident occurred on January 3rd when Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus was about to deliver Redden's sentence in an attempted battery case. Without warning, Redden lunged over the bench at Judge Holthus, triggering a chaotic scene in which her clerk and a court marshal fought to restrain him. The courtroom cameras recorded the dramatic struggle, and the video quickly spread on the internet and social media.

A week later, Judge Holthus sentenced Redden to up to four years in prison for the battery charge he had previously pleaded guilty to in November. However, the latest indictment for attempted murder alleges that Redden not only attacked Judge Holthus but also physically assaulted a Las Vegas police officer. The indictment states that Redden grabbed the judge, pulled her hair, placed his hands around her throat, and possibly hit her on the head using unknown means. He is also accused of punching, kicking, and pushing the police officer.

During the initial hearing, Redden's foster mother, Karen Springer, and his older sister, LaDonna Daniels, revealed that he has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, court records indicated that he was found competent to stand trial.

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson pointed out that Redden's adult criminal history involved convictions for three felonies and nine misdemeanors, mostly related to violent acts.

The upcoming arraignment on February 29th will mark the next step in this case, as Redden faces serious charges, including attempted murder. As the legal proceedings progress, the motive behind the attack and any underlying factors contributing to Redden's actions will likely be examined further.

It is yet to be seen how this incident will impact court security measures and the safety of judges and court staff in Las Vegas. The viral nature of the video and the severity of the charges against Redden have raised concerns about the potential risks faced by those who administer justice in the courtroom.

Legal experts and the public eagerly await the outcome of this case, with hopes that justice will be served for the victim and that measures will be implemented to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
