Edward Poindexter, a man convicted of planting a suitcase bomb that killed police officer Larry Minard in 1970, has died at the age of 79 while being treated for a medical condition at the Reception and Treatment Center of the Nebraska Department of Corrections. The Department of Corrections confirmed Poindexter's death on Thursday.

Poindexter and his accomplice David Rice were convicted in 1971 of first-degree murder and received life sentences for their involvement in the fatal bombing. Rice passed away in 2016.

Advocates advocating for Poindexter's release have consistently argued that there was questionable evidence leading to his conviction. In 2022, the Omaha World-Herald published an article penned by journalism students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, examining the news reports from 1970 and highlighting the concerns regarding the evidence presented during the trial.

At this time, the Department of Corrections has not disclosed the cause of Poindexter's death. As per the provisions under Nebraska law, a grand jury will be convened to investigate the circumstances surrounding his passing.
