In a significant development, Kenneth DeHart, the man accused of fatally shooting a sheriff's deputy in Tennessee, has been captured in Knoxville. Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong confirmed that DeHart, 42, was taken into custody on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident occurred last week during a routine traffic stop in Maryville, when DeHart allegedly shot at the deputies, fatally injuring one and injuring another. Following the shooting, a manhunt was launched, with authorities warning the public that DeHart should be considered "armed and dangerous."
Knoxville police revealed through social media platform X that DeHart was apprehended at a residence in the city. However, no further details about the arrest have been made available at this time.
Prior to his capture, DeHart was wanted on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and felon in possession of a firearm, according to the Blount County Sheriff's Office.
The incident unfolded when deputies Greg McCowan, 43, and Shelby Eggers, 22, pulled over DeHart's SUV. Despite being ordered to exit the vehicle, DeHart defied the deputies and remained inside. A stun gun was used by the officers, but it had no effect on him, as stated by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
During the encounter, DeHart allegedly produced a gun and fired shots, striking both deputies. Tragically, Deputy McCowan succumbed to his injuries at a hospital, while Deputy Eggers was struck in the leg, hospitalized, and released the next day. She is currently recovering at her home, according to the sheriff's office.
Blount County, where the incident occurred, is located just south of Knoxville. The capture of DeHart brings some relief to the community and marks a crucial step towards justice for the fallen deputy and his injured colleague.
As the investigation continues, authorities will seek to uncover the motive behind this violent attack. Further details regarding the arrest and trial of DeHart are expected to be revealed in the coming days.
