A recently released police report has shed light on the motivations behind the Louisville bank mass shooting that took place on April 10, 2023. The report reveals that Connor Sturgeon, the 25-year-old shooter, was driven by his outrage over lax gun laws and aimed to spur politicians into action regarding stricter gun control measures.

Sturgeon, who had previously worked at the Old National Bank, purchased an AR-15 and carried out a deadly rampage, resulting in the deaths of five co-workers and injuries to eight others. The victims were identified as Thomas Elliott, 63, Joshua Barrick, 40, Juliana Farmer, 45, Deana Eckert, 57, and James Tutt, 64.

According to his personal writings, Sturgeon felt a sense of despair and believed that his ability to easily obtain firearms played a role in the tragedy. He expressed frustration towards "those in power" and the National Rifle Association (NRA), blaming them for the easy sale of guns. In his journal, he lamented that "upper class white people dying" might be the catalyst needed for change.

Furthermore, the police report reveals that Sturgeon had purchased an AR-15 just six days before the shooting. His journal entries indicated his desire to make an impact and spur change in gun laws. He expressed shock at how simple it was for him to purchase the weapon and ammunition.

President Joe Biden responded to the incident, blaming Republicans for their failure to address the issue of gun violence. He called for measures such as safe storage requirements, universal background checks, and the elimination of gun manufacturers' immunity from liability.

The police report also reveals that Sturgeon had no criminal history, allowing him to pass the necessary federal background checks. Kentucky, however, does not have "red flag" laws that prevent the sale of firearms to individuals considered potentially dangerous.

Friends of Sturgeon expressed surprise at his involvement in the shooting, describing him as intelligent and popular. Some suggested that a series of concussions he had sustained during sports activities may have had an impact on his mindset.
