[Date], Lincoln, Nebraska - The Lincoln Police have revealed the identity of the officer who discharged his weapon during a recent incident where a suspect fled a traffic stop. Officer Joseph Kernan, who has served with the department for one year, was named as the officer involved in the shooting, according to authorities.

The incident took place on Sunday around 9 a.m. when Officer Kernan conducted a routine traffic stop near the intersection of 19th and Knox Streets. However, the driver of a white Hyundai Azera refused to comply and sped away, eventually pulling into the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex. Officer Kernan pursued the vehicle and positioned his cruiser behind it.

Unexpectedly, the driver reversed the Hyundai further into the parking lot, maneuvering into a dead-end. In an attempt to elude capture, the driver reversed once again, crashing into a retaining wall and a parked vehicle. Undeterred, the suspect then accelerated towards Officer Kernan, who had exited his patrol car. Faced with immediate danger, the officer discharged his weapon, firing two shots that struck the hood of the Hyundai.

Despite the shots, the suspect managed to drive away, causing further damage to the vehicle as it collided with large landscaping rocks. Miraculously, Officer Kernan emerged from the encounter unharmed.

Police later located the abandoned Hyundai near 9th and Manatt Streets later that same evening. Authorities have determined that the suspect was not injured during the incident and are still actively searching for their whereabouts.

The Lincoln Police Department is urging anyone with information regarding the suspect or their current location to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation. Officer Joseph Kernan, a dedicated member of the department, will be provided with any necessary support and counseling following the traumatic event.
