The state of Kentucky has tragically recorded its first reported deaths from respiratory viruses this winter season, officials announced on Thursday. The fatalities include two young children, one who succumbed to the influenza virus and the other to COVID-19. It was revealed that neither child had received immunization against the viruses that led to their untimely deaths.

Dr. Steven Stack, the commissioner of the Department for Public Health, emphasized the seriousness of influenza and COVID-19, stating that these illnesses can be fatal for some individuals, particularly young children. He underscored the importance of vaccination, urging those who have not been immunized to promptly receive updated influenza and COVID-19 vaccines, in addition to other recommended immunizations, to safeguard their health.

Unfortunately, the specific location within the state where the children resided has not been disclosed.

Respiratory illnesses, such as influenza, COVID-19, and RSV, have been prevalent throughout Kentucky, with cases consistently rising over the past five weeks. This underscores the necessity for preventative measures, including vaccination.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advises individuals aged six months and older to receive annual flu and COVID-19 vaccines, especially those who are at a higher risk of developing complications.
