SARASOTA, Fla. - Sarasota County authorities have launched an investigation following the discovery of a deceased individual on the Legacy Trail. Patrol deputies responded to a call reporting a medical emergency shortly before noon on December 15th.

Upon arrival, Sarasota County Fire Department personnel joined forces with the police to assess the situation. The scene was cleared by both agencies just before 12:30 p.m., but details surrounding the incident remain scarce.

A deputy revealed during an interview with ABC7's Rob Wells that the area where the body was found has been a hotbed for homeless activity. The 20-mile stretch of the Legacy Trail is known to be frequented by transients, who often camp and seek refuge amongst the trees along the path. However, it is currently unknown if any homeless persons were involved in the incident.

Last week, first responders engaged in a safety blitz on the trail, resulting in over 100 conversations with individuals. Numerous citations were issued, and one individual was apprehended after hours, having an active arrest warrant. These increased police efforts on the trail aim to maintain a safe environment for all visitors.

Looking ahead, plans for development on the Legacy Trail include potential connections to various prominent locations. This includes the possibility of linking to the Bobby Jones Golf Course, establishing a connection to Nathan Benderson Park, and extending the trail's reach to the Celery Fields.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. The police are determined to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the deceased individual.
