SEATAC, Wash. - Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) has seen a significant increase in holiday travel this year, with a surge of more than 10% compared to the previous year. Travel volumes are now nearing pre-pandemic levels, causing increased congestion at the airport. Alongside this bustling atmosphere, flight attendants from the airport's flagship airline will be picketing on Tuesday.

Passengers at SEA express their surprise at the higher-than-expected crowds, with one traveler, Jeff Comey, stating, "It's a little bit busier than I thought at this time." Comey added, "I'm just glad I won't be doing it next week." The busiest day for the airport is expected to be on Saturday, with a whopping 158,000 passengers arriving, departing, and connecting at SEA on that day.

Town car driver Dimitiry Domanim shares his frustrations, emphasizing the terrible traffic situation. Domanim explains, "Out here, once you get to departures, there's a 10-15-minute wait just to get to the doors."

Amidst the surge in passenger numbers, many flight attendants with Alaska Airlines are planning to picket on Tuesday afternoon outside of SEA as part of a nationwide day of action. Their aim is to demand fair contracts that include significant pay increases. The airline union points out that Alaska Airlines can afford these proposals, as just recently, the company announced its plans to acquire Hawaiian Airlines for a staggering $1.9 billion.

In response to the picketing, Alaska Airlines has offered the union an immediate 15% increase in the wage scale. The company also intends to meet with the negotiation team again in January and February to continue discussions.

It is important to note that Southwest and American Airlines are also currently engaged in challenging negotiations with their respective unions. These negotiations reflect the increased demands for fair contracts and better working conditions within the airline industry.

As holiday travel continues to rise and flight attendants advocate for their rights, SEA remains a hub of activity during this festive season. Passengers are advised to plan ahead and expect delays while these labor issues are addressed.
