Groton Police Seek Help in Identifying Hit-and-Run Driver Who Injured K9 Officer

Groton, Massachusetts - The Groton Police Department is seeking the public's assistance in locating the driver responsible for hitting a police K9 officer on Wednesday, causing severe injuries. K9 Bane was struck by a vehicle on Pleasant Street near the police station at approximately 4:50 p.m. on December 20th, according to a statement released by the Groton police on their official Facebook page.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver of the vehicle that hit K9 Bane fled the scene and continued driving towards Ayer. However, three Good Samaritans, including two occupants of nearby vehicles, stopped to render aid to the black labrador. The individuals provided assistance until further help arrived.
Due to the nature of the accident, K9 Bane sustained multiple serious injuries, including a broken femur, dislocated hip, broken ribs, and punctured lungs. The injured officer was immediately rushed to Tufts Animal Hospital, where he is currently in serious but stable condition. Police officials have revealed that Bane will undergo surgery for his hip and legs next week, following which he will recover at home with his handler and family.
In an update shared by the Groton police, it was reported that K9 Bane is expected to make a full recovery. However, the department is urging anyone who may have any information regarding the incident, especially those with access to nearby security cameras, to come forward.
