A Geismar man has been apprehended and is now facing charges for reportedly assaulting law enforcement officers during the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, according to authorities.
Edward Richmond Jr., aged 40, has been charged with several felony offenses, including civil disorder, entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon, as well as assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers. In addition, he is facing multiple misdemeanor charges.
The U.S. Attorney's Office stated that Richmond was captured on body camera footage using a baton to strike law enforcement officers multiple times in the Lower West Terrace Tunnel, which was a site of violent attacks against law enforcement during the incident.
Reports indicate that Richmond traveled from Ohio to Washington, D.C. along with approximately nine other individuals who planned to participate in the rallies held on January 6.

According to the Associated Press, Richmond has a previous criminal history as a former U.S. Army soldier. He was convicted of voluntary manslaughter for the killing of a handcuffed Iraqi civilian in 2004, leading to a three-year prison sentence.
