More freezing rain is expected to further hinder Portland's recovery from Wednesday's ice storm, extending the hazardous road conditions and causing potential flight cancellations. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the Portland area from 10 a.m. Thursday to 10 a.m. Friday.

The Port of Portland reported that 70 arriving and departing flights had already been canceled as of Thursday afternoon due to the weather. This is in addition to the 23 cancellations earlier in the week due to grounded MAX-9 planes. Despite the cancellation of approximately half of the 142 flights from Wednesday, maintenance teams at Portland International Airport (PDX) are working diligently to minimize icy conditions and keep both runways operational.

Officials are urging residents to stay home if possible as certain areas of Portland remain slippery and more freezing rain is expected later in the day. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) spokesperson, Don Hamilton, emphasized the importance of staying off the roads to ensure safety. Although Interstate 84 between Troutdale and Hood River reopened on Wednesday night after a 31-hour closure, ODOT could close it again depending on the effectiveness of applying sand, salt, and de-icer on the road's surface.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has also urged people to avoid unnecessary travel, citing the ongoing weather forecast. PBOT spokesperson, Dylan Rivera, highlighted the risks associated with driving in such conditions, including loss of traction, potential collisions, and difficulties accessing public transportation, which is still experiencing delays. Rivera called on residents to assist in clearing icy debris from sidewalks and ensuring storm drains remain unobstructed to prevent water accumulation on the streets.

As the freezing rain persists, Portland continues to face challenges in its recovery efforts. The city's residents are encouraged to prioritize safety by staying off the roads and assisting in maintaining clear pathways for pedestrians.
